This is an original wood carving by me, Josh. This unique creature makes a great wood gift.
I made this pipe smoker in a piece of Big Leaf Maple Burl. This is a very unique wood, in that it has many pins and projections coming from it. I love the crustacean-like look of this wood.
“Pokey Smoker”
9 1/2” tall, 7” wide, 3” thick
I made this carving using a variety of tools. I began with a chainsaw for “roughing out” the shape. I then refined the carving using several different burrs in my rotary hand tool. Once I achieved the desired shape, I sanded the wood to make it very smooth. I finished this carving with several coats of spray polyurethane and oil paint.
Burls are formed on trees due to some form of stress, usually an agrobacteria. The stressed tree sends lots of sprouts to a localized area, forming a burl. Burls are beautiful to view and they area also very dense and strong. The grain is interlocking and tight. I really love this particular species of burl because of its lovely color and interesting characteristics.
Everything in my shop is made by hand, by me, Josh. I don’t have any elves or helpers. When you buy from me, you are helping to support a small business, not some huge corporation. Care instructions
My carvings can be cleaned using many different methods. A feather duster works nicely. Compressed air (duster or air compressor) also works well. If on a porch or indoors, my carvings will never need a new coat of sealer. Chainsaw carvings that are outdoors will need a fresh coat of sealer each year.
