Please just let me know, as a note, when you purchase this carving.

Hand carved in Big Leaf Maple burl by me, Josh :)

I signed and dated the back. There is also a hanger on the back for easy installation.

I am in charge of everything that goes on in this shop....The carving, packaging, listing, shipping, communication...It's all me. I don't have any elves, helpers or workers. So, when you buy from me, you are supporting me and my family. We really appreciate you!

This is a one-of-a-kind piece of art. There will never be another carving just like this one. This carving began as an idea, then a sketch, and then the fun stuff- wood chips :)

I used a whole lot of different tools to make this carving. It began with a sketch and ended with lots of sand paper, urethane and a little oil paint. In between were jig saws, hand tools and router bits. This type of carving is called, "pierced relief". Pierced reliefs are very time-consuming carvings, but I really love to create them! This is truly a one of a kind carving.

There are some live edges to this carving, bark inclusions and pins on the outside edges of the burl. The grain has some eyes and curl to it. I really love this type of wood. These burls grow on Big Leaf Maples and are just amazing to me. Many buds are sent to one area where a burl is formed and the resulting wood is very hard with interlocking grain. There is also some Spalted wood to this piece. The yellowish areas are Spalted. Spalted wood is an early stage of decay in wood, and adds a very unique look.

This carving is sealed with three coats of sealer and will last a lifetime. I used a green dye to create the grassy area. The grain of the wood is still visible through the opaque dye. I really love this added, contrasting effect :)

I will be glad to engrave something in the back, as long as it is fairly short, free of charge. Something like, "Happy Anniversary!", "I love you so much", "9/16/07", etc. Please let me know, as a note, what you would like carved in the back when you purchase this carving. My engraving is nothing fancy, but very meaningful.

I carve everyday for a living. It's my favorite thing in the world to do :) The two things that I love most are my family and carving wood. So, it only makes sense that I carve wood to support my family :) I have been at it for almost 9 years and I still love it just as much as I did when I began!

I live in the woods, so I'm very inspired by what's around me- trees, animals and sometimes people :)

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom and personalized orders

Yes, I sometimes take custom orders :) Contact me and we can discuss the specifics.

I really enjoy creating themed walking sticks such as Odin, Thor, Baron Samedi or many, many other possibilities. If you'd like a stick with bears, owls, or whatever else you might have in mind, just shoot me a message and we can discuss it.

I am also happy to make custom chainsaw carvings of about any animal or object you'd like.

I know that, as a customer, you expect a certain level of control over the custom process and I, as an artist, expect a certain level of freedom. When we are able to meet in the middle, beautiful things can happen :)

Don't be afraid to message me :) Thanks so much!

Care instructions

My carvings can be cleaned using many different methods. A feather duster works nicely. Compressed air (duster or air compressor) also works well. If on a porch or indoors, my carvings will never need a new coat of sealer. Chainsaw carvings that are outdoors will need a fresh coat of sealer each year.
